14 weeks



Here is what is going on with our baby this week according to babycenter.com;

This week's big developments: Your baby can now squint, frown, grimace, pee, and possibly suck his thumb! Thanks to brain impulses, his facial muscles are getting a workout as his tiny features form one expression after another. His kidneys are producing urine, which he releases into the amniotic fluid around him — a process he'll keep up until birth. He can grasp, too, and if you're having an ultrasound now, you may even catch him sucking his thumb.  Your baby's stretching out. From head to bottom, he measures 3 1/2 inches — about the size of a lemon — and he weighs 1 1/2 ounces. His body's growing faster than his head, which now sits upon a more distinct neck. By the end of this week, his arms will have grown to a length that's in proportion to the rest of his body. (His legs still have some lengthening to do.) He's starting to develop an ultra-fine, downy covering of hair, called lanugo, all over his body. Your baby's liver starts making bile this week — a sign that it's doing its job right — and his spleen starts helping in the production of red blood cells. Though you can't feel his tiny punches and kicks yet, your little pugilist's hands and feet (which now measure about 1/2 inch long) are more flexible and active.



Welcome to your second trimester! Your energy is likely returning, your breasts may be feeling less tender, and your queasiness may have completely abated by now. If not, hang on — chances are good it will soon be behind you (although an unlucky few will still feel nauseated months from now).  The top of your uterus is a bit above your pubic bone, which may be enough to push your tummy out a tad. Starting to show can be quite a thrill, giving you and your partner visible evidence of the baby you've been waiting for. Take some time to plan, daydream, and enjoy this amazing time. It's normal to worry a bit now and then, but try to focus on taking care of yourself and your baby, and having faith that you're well equipped for what's ahead.
 
As for me, my belly is poking out more than a tad!  It's getting hard to hide, even in my baggier men's tshirts it's still sort of obvious.  Some people may still question whether I am pregnant or bloated upon first glance, but there is definitely a protruding tummy visible.  My tummy has gotten firm all over now also, rather than just feeling like extra pudge a few weeks ago.  I'm still feeling well most of the time, with an hour of nausea here and there.  I'm still craving lots of fruits and veggies and made another boiled cabbage this past weekend.  I'm still LOVING sushi and the Edy's strawberry fruit bars.  I've been craving a hot dog for several weeks, and when there were some being served at Jeremy's company picnic on Sunday I was THRILLED.  I had the dog, bun, chopped onions, relish, ketchup, and mustard and thought it was the best thing that I have ever eaten.  If I didn't have self-control I would have had two, maybe three.  I think I will definitely be picking up some turkey dogs this week and enjoying these at home more often.  I've been craving a Taco Salad (homemade, not from The Bell) for a few weeks now, and I'm hoping to get around to making that sometime soon also.    My skin on my belly has been itching like crazy (I'm assuming from my skin stretching), so I've resorted to lathering it with lotion each evening.  There have been nights where we have both lost sleep because I couldn't stay still and stop scratching it, and let's just say that Jeremy isn't too thrilled with me constantly shaking the bed with my scratching shenanigans.  Everything is great in prego-ville, so far the second trimester seems to be much kinder to me than the first trimester and I'm actually starting to enjoy being pregnant.

baby stuff

this morning i ventured out with jeremy's mom to load up on baby stuff.  we went and picked up a crib that i had found on craigslist, and stopped by the home of a friend of a friend where i was able to score tons of baby stuff for next to nothing.  now we've gotten almost all of our major purchase baby items out of the way (for next to nothing) and just have cloth diapers and a breast pump as our remaining larger expenses.  i've so much enjoyed the thrill of the hunt and the bargain that i'm a little sad that we have most of the baby stuff that we need now.


i had never even heard of peg perego strollers before, i think they tend to be a good amount most expensive than the brands and models that i had been researching.  from what i have looked up now, they seem to be the cadillac of strollers, to be super top of the line, light weight for their size, and have all the bells and whistles.  this stroller was $70, and the infant carrier/ car seat (which snaps into the stroller for a travel system) was $50.  i think i could have found a lesser brand stroller and infant carrier used for a little cheaper, but i really love these two, and love their dark, gender neutral colors (as i'm sure jeremy loves the fact that they aren't too baby-ish so he can keep his masculinity in tact while pushing it around)


this changing pad was $3.  the lamp and baby monitor on this dresser had been picked up over a month ago from a different yard sale.  the basket i just had lying around, and inside the basket is an ear thermometer that was free, that the friend of a friend just tossed in with the rest of the stuff that i got.  the dresser was free (to us).  it was an old dresser that jeremy's parents were getting rid of, the original color wasn't our taste, but jeremy's mom sanded it for us, and painted it with paint (sort of a pea greenish) that she had already had on hand in her garage from a prior project that she decided not to do.


the crib mattress was $15 from the friend of a friend.  the crib was $40 from craigslist.  it's probably not the exact crib that i would have picked out if i was getting something new (i probably would have gotten a 4 in 1 convertible), but for $40 i feel like it was a great deal!  it met my criteria of matching the rocker that we had gotten from a previous yard sale, and it is also a 2 in 1 convertible crib to toddler bed, which is something that i was looking for.  (this crib isn't fully assembled yet... i battled with it for an hour and then got frustrated and decided to leave it for jeremy)

not pictured:  on friday i had a little time to kill before jeremy got off of work, so i stopped by a second hand childrens store and got a baby bjorn infant carrier for $13.  saturday i also got a matt to put under the infant car seat for $3, which protects the seat of the car from scrathches, spills and scrapes from car seats.  i also got an eddie bauer childs car seat that i can use once our little one outgrows the infant car seat.  i also got a handful of onesies/ jammies for $1 each.  one of them happens to be a while sleeper with red crawfish all over... perfect for our little new orleanean baby!

weekly verse: Philippians 1:18

Now that I've finished memorizing Genesis 12:2-3 from last week I'm ready to move on.  And yes, I still remember Philippians 1:21 from the week prior.

I actually read this passage of Scripture two weeks ago while doing my ladies Bible study homework.  It didn't really convict me at the time, but within the last week my mind keeps drifting back there and I realized that I needed to give in and spend some time back in it. 

Philippians 1:18 What then? Only that in every way, whether in pretense or in truth, Christ is proclaimed; and in this I rejoice. Yes, and I will rejoice,

To really understand it you definitely need to at least absorb the context of Philippians 1:15-17 also.

Philippians 1:15-17 Some, to be sure, are preaching Christ even from envy and strife, but some also from good will; the latter do it out of love, knowing that I am appointed for the defense of the gospel; the former proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition rather than from pure motives, thinking to cause me distress in my imprisonment.

Once you have the context it's easy to understand that Paul is saying that whether people are preaching out of the correct or incorrect motivation is irrelevant, but that Christ is being preached, and in this he (Paul) will rejoice.

Lately (upon many occasions) I've found myself quick to judge, criticize, or be negative of other believers (churches, ministries, famous Pastors, people etc.) who don't approach ministry/ theology the same way that I do.  I've found myself evaluating them, as if I was perfect, and have it all figured out (yeah right!).  I'm so ashamed of this critical part of my heart.  I seek to be unified with and find the good in my fellow brothers and sisters in Christ. 

Philippians 1:27 Only conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or remain absent, I will hear of you that you are standing firm in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel;

I'm going to spend the next week studying these verses and memorizing verse 18 while I seek Christ to conform me more to His image, and make my heart more like His.

13 weeks


Here is what is going on with our baby this week, according to babycenter.com;

Fingerprints have formed on your baby's tiny fingertips, her veins and organs are clearly visible through her still-thin skin, and her body is starting to catch up with her head — which makes up just a third of her body size now. If you're having a girl, she now has more than 2 million eggs in her ovaries. Your baby is almost 3 inches long (the size of a medium shrimp) and weighs nearly an ounce.


This is the last week of your first trimester, and your risk of miscarriage is now much lower than earlier in pregnancy. Next week marks the beginning of your second trimester, a time of relative comfort for many women who see early pregnancy symptoms such as morning sickness and fatigue subside.

As for me, I'm feeling pretty good overall, a tiny bit of nausea here and there, but no more than an hour or two at a time, a couple days a week.  My crazy mood swings and short fuse seem to have tapered off, but I am still extremely emotional and cried at a herd of little kids running a race on Sunday at the park.  My belly is continuing to stick out a little more each week, but I'm managing to cover it up with baggy clothes still.  I'm still fighting off the bellaband and maternity clothes, although out of comfort I'm sure I'll be wearing them very shortly, maybe by the end of the week.  I'm down to only 1 pair of jeans that is really comfortable to wear as is still.  At my doctor's appointment last Wednesday I got to hear the heart beat, and my doctor said that it is strong and healthy.  Apparently we're not going to be able to find out the gender until 20 weeks, so still 7 weeks to go on that.  I'm still eating whatever I want whenever, but I'm still drifting more towards savory foods than sweet ones.  I crave sushi every. single. day.  (but I don't give in because our budget can't afford it).  I'm still wanting and eating lots of fruits and veggies.  Anything meaty and cheesy is tempting.  I haven't eaten a hot dog in more years than I can remember, but I keep smelling them grilling when Jeremy and I walk around the park and the smell is pure torture... I. WANT. ONE.  My newest love of the week is Edy's Fruit Bars.  I have a box of lime at work and a box of strawberry at home and they are AMAZING, that's the closest to dessert that really sounds good to me.

Sweet and Sour Boiled Cabbage

Because I've been craving lots of veggies, because cabbage was on sale last week, and because despite how gross it smells while cooking and how many people may hate it, I just love me some boiled cabbage!  My husband on the other hand HATES boiled cabbage, although he hasn't tried it this way yet.  When I first met him he swore that he hated all cabbage, cole slaw, etc.  Since then I've gotten him to try (and enjoy) sauteed red cabbage, and an Asian cole slaw.  Somehow he mentally can't get over the hump yet to try boiled cabbage though, maybe one day, and until then no problem, because there is more left for me, and I can seriously eat an entire head of boiled cabbage in a day, I love it that much!


This is seriously delicious!  It would be great with either red or green cabbage, in fact, I tend to like the red cabbage better because the bowl doesn't look so bleh with the pretty bright purple colored cabbage.  Adding bacon, ham, or butter while boiling the cabbage would add even more flavor, but honestly this is great without it, so I save the calories where I can.

Sweet and Sour Boiled Cabbage

-1 head cabbage, quartered, cored, and then quarters cut again into large chunks
-salt and pepper to taste
-1 tsp carraway seeds
-1/2 cup sugar
-1/2 cup white vinegar

Place cabbage in the bottom of a large pot, cover with water.  Season with salt, pepper, and carraway.  Bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer for 45 minutes (or until cabbage reaches desired tenderness).  Remove from heat.  Allow to cool for 5 minutes.  Stir in sugar and vinegar.

weekly verse: Genesis 12:2-3

I've already managed to memorize Philippians 1:21 (it was quite a short and easy verse) so it's time to move on. 

The Lord has been doing a lot in my heart lately, to show me that I don't have the same heart for the nations that I once did.  Back when we lived in Myrtle Beach we took a few missions classes, and were discipled by a couple who have an amazing heart for and focus on the nations.  At that time we became very burdened for the unreached people groups, and peoples of all countries.  We were constantly talking about other nations, praying for other nations, and evaluating how we fit in to that greater picture of what God is doing.  Lately my focus seems to have gotten more stuck on my specific area, New Orleans.  Which is perhaps easy to do, when faced with constant devastation here.  Just last weekend 8 people were all shot in 1 incident.  The murder rate has seemed increased as of late, and there have been many heart breaking murders that involved small children.  This all breaks my heart.  But it shouldn't take my focus off the rest of the world.  I'm still called to be a witness in my Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and to the ends of the earth (Acts 1:8). 

Sometimes I think that for the most part, Americans have had a chance to hear the Gospel, and those who don't believe have just chosen to reject it, and that it is so much more important to focus on those who have not had a chance to hear yet (the unreached people groups).  And then other times I feel that Americans have only heard a watered down version of the Gospel, and that they need to hear the real Truth.  I don't have the answer, this is just the questions that I struggle with, the sides that I'm torn between.  However, in this I am confident... that as of now, God has me placed in New Orleans.  For exactly how long, for exactly what purpose... I don't know, but this is where He has me. 

All that said, I've been trying to nurture my heart for the nations.  This week I'm finding God drawing me to Genesis 12, to His promise to Abram (which is later repeated again and again)...

Genesis 12:2-3 (I know, I made it harder on myself this week with 2 verses, but there are key points that I want to focus on in each)  "I will make you into a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.  I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you."

First point:  Abram was blessed to be a blessing to others
Second point:  All people on earth will be blessed through Abram

Hundreds of years before Jesus was born, died, or rose again God was already promising to reach all of the peoples (or families, or nations... depending on your translation) through Abram.  Long before Jesus was rejected by his own people, before the Gentiles were grafted in, God's heart for all peoples was clear.  God's heart hasn't changed, He is still at working, drawing peoples of all nations to Himself, so that at the throne, every tribe, tongue and nation will be present (Revelation 7:9).  God's job (His work using us) isn't done until all of these people have had a chance to hear (Matthew 24:14) the Gospel.

Lord, make my heart more like yours... give me joy in what you delight in, give me sadness in what saddens you.  Help me to see your big picture, use me for your big picture.  Lord, I thank you that you are so big, that you have always been, will always be, and control all things... that you have been at work, since the beginning of time, weaving this great story to which we already know the ending of, and I just thank you for including me in that.

Portobello Parmesan

As I mentioned in a previous post I've been craving lots of veggies lately.  Portobello mushrooms were on sale at the grocery store last week, so I took advantage of that to whip up this vegetarian version of Chicken or Eggplant Parmesan.


This isn't actually a very authentic version of a Chicken Parm knock-off, because I didn't fry anything, and I didn't use any actual parmesan cheese (because I didn't have any on hand).  You could easily mix some parmesan in with the mozzarella on top for a slightly different flavor.  If you notice in the above picture, two of the mushroom caps (lower center, and upper right) appear slightly more greasy and green-ish.  That is because I had a little pesto sauce in the fridge that needed to be used, so I stuffed those two portobellos with pesto (rather than marinara) prior to covering with cheese.  Pesto/ mozzarella portobellos are something that I love to serve as an appetizer or side dish, and when I do so I don't usually serve them with marinara sauce, although the combo did work well with these.  You could also add a little more flavor to the mushrooms by drizzling them with olive oil and/ or balsamic vinegar prior to topping with sauce and baking (but they are fine as is).



Portobello Parmesan (well really mozzarella in this case)

-6 portobello mushrooms, cleaned
-full recipe of marinara sauce below (or use your favorite jarred variety
-salt and pepper
-2 cups mozzarella cheese

Cover bottom of 13x9 dish with half of sauce.  Place mushrooms (gill side up) in dish.  Sprinkle mushrooms with salt and pepper.  Cover mushrooms with remaining marinara sauce.  Bake at 400 for 25 minutes.  Sprinkle cheese over mushrooms and bake 5 more minutes, or until cheese is melted.

Marinara Sauce


This sauce can be used for spaghetti, manicotti, zitti, lasagna, chicken parmesan or your favorite Italian dish.
-1 (28 oz) can crushed tomatoes
-1 (15 oz) can tomato sauce
-4 cloves garlic, minced
-1 tablespoon white sugar
-1 tablespoon red wine vinegar
-2 teaspoons dried oregano
-1 pinch red pepper flakes
-2 teaspoons dried basil (or if I have fresh on hand I snip it and stir it in at the last minute instead)

In a large pot combine the crushed tomatoes, tomato sauce, garlic, sugar, vinegar, oregano, basil, and red pepper flakes. Stir all together and simmer over low heat for at least 30 minutes.  Stir frequently to prevent burning.
